Most people know John Logan's work, if at all, from the screenplays to such films as Rango, Hugo, Any Given Sunday, The Aviator and the forthcoming James Bond flick Skyfall. But when he's not scripting big Hollywood fare, he's an acclaimed playwright—and that dichotomy is eerily echoed in the premise of his play Red. It concerns the conflict that painter Mark Rothko feels about doing murals for the Four Seasons, a commission he worries might qualify as selling out. Rothko's work has an odd place in popular culture: A second-season episode of TV's Mad Men has a plot about the ad agency's head buying a Rothko, a sequence that's used to make a point about the subtle emotions of abstract art. You can debate all this for yourself at a special discussion at McIntyre's Fine Books in Fearrington Village on Monday, Sept. 17, at 6 p.m., or just see the play when it opens and argue about it with someone afterward. —Zack Smith
