Red Clay Ramblers

When: Sat., Oct. 6, 2 p.m. 2012
Price: Free

This year marks the 40th that the Red Clay Ramblers have been wowing audiences with their string-band stylings. Old-time, bluegrass, country, jazz and gospel find equal footing in the band's repertoire. The music's just half the story, though: The Ramblers have long been interested in taking North Carolina roots music beyond the typical stage. There was the State Department-sponsored 11-week tour of sub-Saharan Africa, the off-Broadway run in actor/ playwright Sam Shepard's A Lie of the Mind, and a collaboration with the Carolina Ballet, for starters. The band's connection to musical theater is arguably as important as their recorded catalog, which is perhaps why they're headlining this Downtown Family Get Down event. Geared to showcase Broadway music under the stars, it also features performances by Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble, Peace University Musical Theater, Performance Edge and Raleigh Little Theatre. Admission is free for the 2 p.m. show, which includes children's activities such as face painting and magicians. —Ashley Melzer
