Record Store Day

When: Sat., April 20 2013

Mixed opinions about Record Store Day abound: For some, it's an industry-coordinated attempt to remind people that record stores exist and to pilfer their money with limited-edition items that don't foster new music buyers as much as galvanize the old ones. For others, including shopkeepers, it's a chance to have a big day at the register and a little fun, too. No matter your take, this day will certainly be a busy one for local music, especially the lineup of bands playing Schoolkids Records in Raleigh (including former Crooked Still singer Aoife O'Donovan and Triangle-gone-NYC songwriter Greg Humphreys), the release of the sterling collaboration between Hiss Golden Messenger and Steve Gunn, and the physical delivery of the Kickstarter-driven Pet-Tich-Eye Project (see page 44). Ryan Adams will release a new project under a new name, while The Avett Brothers share a split with Randy Travis. R.E.M. is issuing an archival set from Greensboro, and Tift Merritt will offer a silkscreened 12-inch including several unreleased cuts. —Grayson Currin
