Post Turkey Day Jam with Hindugrass, Swang Brothers, Caitlin Cary, Chip Robinson, Lynn Blakey, Katharine Whalen, Jon Shain

When: Sat., Nov. 24, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $10

As after-Thanksgiving traditions go, this Saturday evening event beats Black Friday shopping sales six ways to Sunday. Durham singer-songwriter Jon Shain has been inviting musician friends and collaborators to take part in his laid-back tryptophanic comedown concert for 12 years now, typically showcasing a broad range of Triangle talent and always benefiting a good cause. Headliner Hindugrass plays just what its name suggests: a fusion of trad-Indian music and mountain bluegrass styles, rendered acoustically on sarod, tabla, guitar, violin and the like. (Check out the video for their tune "Appalachistan" on YouTube.) The Swang Brothers are also appropriately named, blending twangy country with swing-jazz in an acoustic/electric hybrid trio format. Perhaps the most intriguing spot on the bill is an opening songwriters-in-the-round set in which host Shain will be joined by former Squirrel Nut Zippers member and current Fascinators leader Katharine Whalen, Backsliders/Heavy Beat Outfit ringleader Chip Robinson and Tres Chicas chanteuses Caitlin Cary and Lynn Blakey. The $10 cover benefits the Inter-Faith Council for Social Service, a Carrboro charity that provides shelter, food, information and other services to people in need. The show starts at 8 p.m. —Peter Blackstock
