--James P. Cooney III, attorney for death row inmate Alan Gell, after Bertie County Superior Court Judge Cy A. Grant Sr. ordered a new trial for Gell in the 1998 murder of a truck driver. Grant found that the state withheld evidence that might have exonerated him. A News & Observer series on the case by Joseph Neff reported several people--including the star witness, whose story changed several times--told prosecutors they'd seen the victim after prosecutors said Gell had killed him.
