Open-mic readings can be up-and-down, but the session after Flyleaf's Second Thursday reading, tirelessly curated by Stan Absher and Debra Kaufman, is always friendly and high-quality. Poets Beth Copeland and Steve Cushman are the featured readers in November. Copeland, who teaches at Methodist University in Fayetteville, took runner-up for the North Carolina Poetry Council's 2013 Oscar Arnold Young Award with her second book, Transcendental Telemarketer. Cushman, who's also an award-winning novelist, has a new poetry collection, Hospital Work, that draws on his two decades as an X-ray technologist at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro. Meet the readers and organizers at an informal pre-reading gathering at 5:45 p.m. at Foster's Market next door to the bookstore. Sign up for a five-minute open-mic slot no later than 7 p.m.
