Phononova, Rocket Cottage

When: Wed., May 30, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $5

Raleigh quartet Phononova reinvigorates one version of chunky late '80s alternative rock: Guitars slash, slither and ignite, a mix of treble and crunch fueled by guitarists Chris Pilione and Steve Graham. While there's plenty of attack, the arrangements are choppy and pulsing with more than pure aggression, reminiscent of Mission of Burma. Raleigh garage-punk trio Rocket Cottage conjures grimy swagger from loose, cowbell-banging boogie. Their payload is delivered in short-lived explosions on overdriven amps that sound like righteous fire hazards. Don't step in front of them; they never brake. Pay $5 at 9 p.m. —Chris Parker
