After the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the USSR a quarter-century ago, citizens of former Soviet Bloc countries across Eastern Europe demonstrated and fought for self-determination. Entire cultures shattered along political, ethnic and sectarian lines. The current conflict in Ukraine is just the latest wrinkle. English playwright David Edgar's Iron Curtain Trilogy delves into that history with cinematic scope. It begins in halls of power in a Prague stand-in at the twilight of the old regime in The Shape of the Table (opening Thursday); shifts to an old church under siege in no-man's-land in Pentecost (opening Friday), where a startling discovery could rewrite centuries of art and religious history; and finds negotiators crossing literal and verbal minefields as they look for a peaceful way to transfer power from a country's Christian minority to its Muslim majority in The Prisoner's Dilemma (opening Saturday). —Byron Woods
