Parker Smith, J Kutchma, Bob Funck, Russ Thompson

When: Sun., Dec. 16, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $8-10

Atlanta's Parker Smith fronts The Bandwith, a four-piece that skillfully blends soulful alt-country ballads, jaunty bluegrass jangles and soaring Southern anthems. Alone, Smith should rely on his warm, twangy voice and easygoing melodies. Local JKutchma occasionally channels the same punk spirit as his band Red Collar on acoustic tunes such "Used to Believe" or "I'll Survive," though he more often pairs his deep lyrical introspection and powerful social commentary to slow-burning Americana shuffles. Fellow Bull City singer-songwriter Bob Funck is unafraid to breach unusual topics—see "When Hitler Was a Baby"—while the pop-infused folk-rock of Raleigh's Russ Thompson is stronger, if less shocking. Tickets for the 8 p.m. show are $8 in advance, $10 at the door. —Spencer Griffith
