Playwright Jon Robin Baitz's study of an affluent and politically connected Palm Springs family that weathers a series of inconvenient (if overdue) homecomings should please patrons who admired Theatre Raleigh's straight-no-chaser 2012 staging of Tracy Letts' August: Osage County. After a six-year absence, Brooke darkens the door of her parents—Lyman, a retired U.S. ambassador and film star, and Polly, a former right-wing screenwriter—just in time for Christmas. Brooke has brought a gift: the manuscript of a tell-all memoir calculated to rip the lid off a less than picture-perfect family past. Ben Brantley's New York Times review praised Other Desert Cities for its "gleaming dialogue, tantalizing hints of a dangerous mystery and a structural care that brings to mind the heyday of Lillian Hellman." Local up-and-comer Jesse Gephart directs a cast including Mark Phialas, Maggie Rasnick and Dana Marks in this Hot Summer Nights production through June 29. —Byron Woods
