The legacy of Hillsborough author Allan Gurganus' novel Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All remains strong more than two decades after it was first published in 1989 to widespread acclaim and eight months on the New York Times best-seller list. The book has been transferred to other media, from an award-winning CBS TV movie with Diane Lane and Donald Sutherland, to a short-lived one-woman show with Ellen Burstyn that ran on Broadway, to prior local iterations with Quinn Hawkesworth in the lead. The production under way, a collaboration between Gurganus and actress Jane Holding, is called Oldest Living Confederate Widow: Her Confession. The performance, which runs for three weeks at Manbites Dog Theater, will have a special performance Saturday, April 24, with an appearance by Gurganus, and a reception and book signing afterward. The event is presented in conjunction with the Regulator Bookshop. —Zack Smith
