Old Quarter, Roseland

When: Thu., Jan. 3, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $5

Old Quarter songwriter John Massengill writes and sings like he has a perpetually broken heart, yielding excellently plaintive '70s-tinted country. An exceptional backing band brings in a respectably nuanced palette, with members of Jack the Radio, The Charming Youngsters and Lonnie Walker trading their usual upbeat energy for something indrawn and highway-ready. The only drawback, then, to Old Quarter's 2012 EP Live Oak is its length—you really can't drive that far in 15 minutes. Here's hoping for a full-length in 2013. Roseland, a new band featuring members of American Aquarium and House of Fools, opens the 9 p.m. show. Tickets are $5 at the door. —Corbie Hill
