It's a marvel that Austin's Okkervil River is popular. The band's wordy, meticulous rock is densely layered, resulting in records that take months to unpack. Given the MP3-a-minute pace of today's music consumption, it's baffling that so many take the time. But when you glimpse the rewards, it makes some sense. The band's 2011 album, I Am Very Far, is a dizzying maze of sound and speech. Syncopated dirges give way to ironic string-bound balladry, which then subsides into drunken lounge stumbles.
