The debut Christmas compilation from Yep Roc Records successfully captures the range and fiery spirit of its label: Collecting new Christmas cuts from a dozen Yep Roc bands, Oh Santa! is alternately cranky or sentimental, thoughtful or whimsical and reverent or mischievous. "Lovely Christmas," a duet between Jason Ringenberg and Kristi Rose, highlights those dichotomies. Rose's verse are pretty and simple, slide guitar skating beneath her dreamy vocals about cheer and warm hearths. That is, until Ringenberg counts himself in, scorching the sweetness with screaming lines about "all the presents/ all the mess." Jake Brennan calls Santa a fat bastard, and The Moaners spit in the face of capitalism for Christmas. But on the sweeter side, Chatham County Line frontman Dave Wilson drags the wide-eyed merriment of Christmases past into adulthood beneath a winking jangle, and Apples in Stereo shakes sleigh bells beneath romantic Christmas memories. Spin half of this for your social revelry, but save the other side for your eggnog reverie.
