Virginia's October 31 haven't released a new album since 2005's in-thrall-of-the-riff powerhouse No Survivors, but these metal classicists have never been about new music much at all, anyway. Led by Deceased dude King Fowley, October 31 makes the metal your mother warned you about, with winks of darkness and the thrill of evil riding high above heroic guitar lines and a rhythm section bound to flog the salvation out of you. Consider the sounds of all of your retro metal heroes, from Maiden and Saxon to King Diamond and Dio, presented with the gruff Southern determination of a band that's been ripping in the underground for two decades. Opener Walpyrgus is a new troupe of local metal standbys.
