This is your annual one-stop chance to catch up on the Duke dance world as faculty and students present work both polished for the stage and bubbling up out of the classroom.
Guest faculty and Duke alum Jessi Knight Walker presents a solo from the collaborative work "Eurydice Descended," based upon Christina Knight's poems about the nymph brought back from the dead by the power of Orpheus' music. Knight reimagines the myth in an apocalyptic Brooklyn, and Walker brings in imagery from Haitian funeral traditions and club and drag culture. Assistant professor Andrea E. Woods Valdés restages the SOULOWORKS piece "i got wings" and performs her own solo created with Ava LaVonne Vinesett. Vinesett, meanwhile, has collaborated with local artist Cici Stevens on "Reaching into the Before-Time," an honoring of the dead and a celebration of death as a transition rather than an ending. Tyler Walters Ballet rep class also presents, and students Maurice Dowell, Alexandra Sansosti and Lindsay Larre perform.
The program is performed Friday and Saturday. Tickets to the 8 p.m. shows are $15 general, $10 seniors, $5 students and under age 16 get in free with the purchase of a ticket. —Chris Vitiello
