Niche, Devil at My Side, Wowolfol

When: Wed., Feb. 27, 10 p.m. 2013

While Southern rock holds virtuosity fairly close to its heart (see Allman, Duane), there's also an emotional core not always present in other technicality-oriented styles. Consider prog's crowded landscape of concept albums set in Middle Earth. Yet Niche, from the musically fertile lowlands of Savannah, Ga., takes overdriven swamp boogie, down-home acoustic shuffle and long-hauler country-rock, and mixes these elements into Rush-worthy jams. Did I mention these guys have serious motherfucking heart? Tourmates Devil at My Side play hard-nosed country-rock, like a gutter punk's take on barroom honky-tonk. Durham's Wowolfol showcases the remarkable songwriting and Southern Goth psychedelics of Hog bandleader and Horseback guitarist Rich James.—Corbie Hill
