New Year's Eve Bodhisattva Ceremony

When: Sat., Dec. 31, 8 p.m. 2011

If one of your 2012 resolutions is to get it together, get fit, stop smoking, stop overeating, stop drinking and stop procrastinating on making major changes in your life, embracing meditation might be the best way to help you on your journey. Zen Buddhism teaches that the practice of sitting in meditation directly engages us with our innate enlightenment or Buddhist Nature. The New Year's Eve ceremony will welcome 2012 with two periods of meditation (zazen) at 8 p.m. and 8:50 p.m. followed by the 9:20 p.m. Bodhisattva Ceremony—a renewal of vows and precepts—and the 9:50 p.m. Fire Ceremony. During the latter, participants write down habits and difficult states of mind they would like to release, then burn the papers in a bonfire along with name cards from memorial services held during the past year and incense stubs that have accumulated throughout the year. Potluck refreshments and beverages will be provided afterward. The center is at 5322 N.C. Highway 86 in Chapel Hill; visit —Christina Cass
