Contemporary artists commonly take traditional handicrafts to conceptual extremes. Ralph Wileman eschews the typical practice of articulating designs in advance on an open weave canvas; his extreme embroidery takes a more spontaneous, painterly approach, sketching possibilities on the weave and diving into the needlework. His works are colorful and fun, at times resembling Paul Klee's more geometric paintings.
