Nederlands Dans Theater 1

When: Wed., April 3, 7:30 p.m. and Fri., April 5, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $10-39

American Dance Festival fans, take note: Carolina Performing Arts began presenting Nederlands Dans Theater here in 2011 to make the point that contemporary ballet is every bit as iconoclastic and out-of-the-box as modern dance. This program includes the U.S. premiere of Chamber, a take on The Rite of Spring by choreographer Medhi Walerski and composer Joby Talbot that CPA commissioned two years ago. Also included is Sol Leon and Paul Lightfoot's literally misty Speak For Yourself, set to Steve Reich and J.S. Bach, along with the waking nightmare of founding choreographer Jiri Kylian's last work for the ensemble, Memoires d'Oubliettes (Memoirs From a Dungeon). A second show on Friday, April 5, features two Leon/Lightfoot compositions: 2009's Sehnsucht (Longing), a surreal meditation for a swiftly tilting room, and 2010's Schmetterling (Butterfly). —Byron Woods
