The Old North State's own symphony kicks off its 80th season with a rollicking, free program in the heart of the capital. Sprinkled with anniversary pomp and reminiscence, "Pops in the City" includes a wide variety of favorites for many musical tastes, including Scott Joplin's "The Entertainer" and Dvorak's symphony "From the New World" as well as works by Copland and Bernstein. Several pieces have North Carolina connections. The free show starts at 7:30 p.m. —Chris Vitiello
