NC Symphony: Sci-Fi Spectacular

When: Thu., June 27, 7:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $28-$80

Those who compose sci-fi scores face a double challenge: The music must fit the story, naturally, but also the universe it takes place in. For John Williams, this meant mirroring the high heroics of myth-driven space opera in his Star Wars overture, but also surrendering to transcendental wonder in the mathematics-based Close Encounters theme. Even within a single franchise, there can be tremendous range: Jerry Goldsmith's familiar Star Trek: The Motion Picture theme (later adapted for The Next Generation) establishes the stately grandeur of intergalactic exploration while packing an essential dose of thunder, while James Horner's phenomenal Star Trek II score switches crazily between menace and triumph. Such works deserve symphonic treatment, which the North Carolina Symphony will give them. With a whole brigade of Storm Troopers on hand (the North and South Carolina 501st, natch) and USS Enterprise helmsman-turned-Facebook LOL factory George Takei as master of ceremonies, this promises to be an extravagant affair. But the ones who get the most out of it probably will be those who close their eyes when the music starts and transport to their own private starfield. —Corbie Hill
