NC Symphony Composer Portraits

When: Fri., May 13, 8 p.m. and Sat., May 14, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $30-45

Thursday's show marks the start of a three-day run of Mahler's extraordinary Ninth, as played by the North Carolina Symphony. The show moves to Raleigh's Meymandi Concert Hall on Friday and Saturday, where it will serve as the end of the classical season for the state symphony, which soon migrates to Cary's Koka Booth Amphitheatre for the summer. What an exclamation point it is: Mahler's last symphony is a liminal triumph, a piece of music that embraced the coming frame shifts in classical music while building boldly from the past. —Grayson Currin
