The Rite of Spring was already one of the most frequently choreographed musical suites in ballet and modern dance. Then Carolina Performing Arts added a few newly commissioned iterations and variations to the pile while devoting an entire season to it this year. As we wait to see how many of them stand the test of time, it will be refreshing to see N.C. School of the Arts perform the startling version with which Shen Wei cemented his reputation as a leading contemporary dance choreographer during a two-part world premiere here at the 2002 and 2003 American Dance Festivals. Set to the work's initial two-piano orchestration, Shen's Rite reveals a dance maker's cool, precise merger of sculpture and painting with movement and music, viewing Stravinsky through an abstract Impressionist's eye. The rest of the bill stays closer to the Ballets Russes, with whom The Rite originated in 1913. After an orchestral performance of Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, the ballet re-creates Nijinsky's Jeux and Borodin's "Polovtsian Dances" from Prince Igor. —Byron Woods
