NC Local Economy Statewide Summit

When: Thu., Nov. 8, 6-8 p.m. 2012
Price: $35

Fired up by the revulsion and resistance of Occupy Wall Street but wondering what to do next? We can do worse than participate in the North Carolina "slow money" movement, which has a convention of sorts today and tomorrow in Pittsboro. What's slow money? Basically, it's a catchy way of saying that we should move to a new economy of local production and local consumption. As an oft-cited statistic has it, "two to four times more money recirculates in our communities when purchases are made at locally owned businesses." So, we're talking about many things that already are quite strong here: farmers markets, energy co-ops and credit unions, for starters. But there's more we can do. Thursday evening's events take place at Angelina's Kitchen, while the conference reconvenes at Oakleaf restaurant, located at Chatham Mills. The expense is quite reasonable: Pay your own meal Thursday, and pay $35 for the Friday sessions. Preregistration is required: Send an email to SLJohnson@cabarruscounty.us or carol@slowmoneync.org. —David Fellerath
