Nazim Hikmet Poetry Festival

When: Sun., April 13, 2 p.m. 2014
Price: Free

The sixth installation of this afternoon-long poetry event pays double honors—to the famed Irish poet Seamus Heaney, who is the subject of a discussion among a group of his friends, and to the festival's namesake, a leading Turkish modernist poet and leftist journalist who spent most of the early 20th century in exile or prison. The 3 p.m. panel on the Nobel Prize-winning Heaney, who died last year, gathers his bibliographer Rand Brandes with poets Betty Adcock, John Balaban and Gibbons Ruark to give a glimpse into the beloved poet's life and his deceptively colloquial yet formally sculpted workapparently with live Irish music. The panel is bookended by a pair of readings and awards ceremonies, first for this year's Nâzm Hikmet Poetry Competition winners (selected from open submissions), then for the Meral Divitci Prize for Turkish Poetry in Translation. A pleasant, literary Sunday afternoon, it's also a rare meeting of two far-flung poetic lineages known for intense lyricism, deeply rooted in two different times and places. —Brian
