Matt Valentine and Erika Elder were taking Americana molds on scenic routes long before the phrases freak folk, free folk or New Weird America were common currency for music critics. Strangely, they've actually done some of their least interesting work since that particularly skewed waveform had its moment, with their unveiled Neil Young-isms occasionally digging deep into the same old ruts instead of pushing them forward. Still, Valentine has a sweetly craggy voice, and they both pay attention to tone and timing in a way that should befuddle those who have ridden Young's Crazy Horse toward more genial, alt-country pastures. Sunday's show follows a Friday gig at The Pinhook. Portland's Herbcraft—who opens Sunday's show—takes a similar sound to further spheres, making this the bill most worth witnessing. —Grayson Currin
