Brian McKnight

Pop, soul, R&B, rock: songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist Brian McKnight has done it all in a career that includes everything from numerous Grammy nominations and awards to a series of platinum-plus crossover albums. Since the early '90s, McKnight has worked with everyone from Boys II Men, Puffy Combs (with Mase) and Vanessa Williams, to name just a few. His latest disc, Superhero, finds him mixing it up between rock, bedroom ballads and soulful pop, and features such high-profile guests as Nate Dogg and 'N Sync's Justin Timberlake. McKnight says that his inspiration for Superhero came from the "superheroes" of everyday life: It's a tribute to the firefighters, schoolteachers and others whose jobs involve a commitment to helping people. With a velvety falsetto that conjures up such icons as Marvin Gaye (or The Purple One, for that matter), expect McKnight to deliver an ultra-smooth performance this Sunday, Jan. 6, at Raleigh's Memorial Auditorium.
