Hijacking Catastrophe: 9/11, Fear & the Selling of American Empire

As Fahrenheit 9/11 takes its leave of movie theaters and enters DVD release (Oct. 5), an even more disturbing, powerfully-argued documentary emerges.

Starting with its provocative, double-entendre title, this film by Duke grad Ronit Ridberg is a detailed and terrifying examination of the neo-conservatives who have taken over the Bush administration's foreign policy. If Michael Moore settled for a creepy, if cheap, shot of Paul Wolfowitz greasing his hair with a spittle-covered comb, Hijacking Catastrophe actually takes us through the Wolfowitz paper trail.

It's worse than we thought. Over the last decade, Wolfowitz and his ideological soulmates have published blueprints for the establishment of an American empire, one that would exert arbitrary military force around the world to secure U.S. interests and even deny the use of outer space to other countries. Most ominous is the document in which the writer acknowledges that the imperialist program is too extreme to execute in normal times. A disaster on the order of Pearl Harbor is needed.

The neo-conservatives got their Pearl Harbor, and now we're on the brink of an election that could divert the neo-conservative tide. A raft of intellectuals and activists--including Tariq Ali, Noam Chomsky, Michael Dyson, Daniel Ellsberg, Stan Goff, Chalmers Johnson, Lt. Col. Karen Kwiatkowski (Ret.), Norman Mailer, Mark Crispin Miller, Scott Ritter and Vandana Shiva are on hand to explain the historical emergency we're facing, and the importance of stopping it in its tracks.

Screening Thursday, Sept. 9, 7:30 p.m. at the Mary Lou Williams Center for Black Culture, 201 West Union Building, Duke Campus. Indy freelancer David Potorti, founder of September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, will speak alongside Jocelyn Sargent of UNC's Institute for African American Research. 684-3814.
