Searching for Angela Shelton

Far away from the gathering of documentarians going on in Durham, there's a rather intriguing film playing at N.C. State's Witherspoon Theater, and sponsored by the campus Women's Center.

Called Searching for Angela Shelton, and directed by a certain woman by that name, this is a film that could only be made with a reasonably common name. After searching online for women called "Angela Shelton," the director rented an RV and traveled the country, talking to all the Angela Sheltons she could.

In the course of her travels, she discovered that 16 of her 32 interview subjects had been beaten, raped or molested, as had the director. We haven't seen the film, but it's unlikely that her findings reflect a particular danger to women named Angela Shelton, rather than being in line with larger statistical samples.

At any rate, director Shelton has received a lot of attention lately, from an appearance on Oprah last fall to recent exposure on 48 Hours Investigates." She also appeared before Congress last month to testify on behalf of the Violence Against Women act. --David Fellerath

Searching for Angela Shelton will be shown April 1 at 3:30 p.m. at the Witherspoon Theater on the NC State Campus. The director will be present to introduce the film, and admission is free.
