What's different this time is that the film is set (and was partly filmed) in New York. The story concerns Naina, the attractive daughter of a large Punjabi family, who's more concerned with finishing her studies for a business degree than fulfilling what to her family is her paramount duty: getting married.
New York isn't known for its monsoons, even when Indians are getting married, but a tempest builds up anyway when Aman, a handsome visitor from India drops into her life. Played by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, Aman is so effortlessly charming, and charmed by Naina, that he's moved to sing Oh, Pretty Woman from atop a taxi--in Hindi, no less.
It's the promise of such over the top show-stoppers that keep us coming back to Bollywood films. But be prepared: As the New York Times' critic Dave Kehr cautions, in an otherwise favorable review, "This is a rich meal that may best be reserved for stomachs accustomed to such bountiful fare."
