The Princess Diaries

Director Garry Marshall may best be known for his other fairy-tale film, Pretty Woman, where the slut finishes first. In The Princess Diaries, Marshall introduces Anne Hathaway (Mia Thermopolis) a young woman of somewhat less humble (and a good deal less compromising) beginnings, who discovers that she is heir to the throne of Genovia, a country that will cease to exist, should she refuse to assume the crown. Enter Julie Andrews (Clarisse Renaldi), queen of Genovia and grandmother of Hathaway who bears the daunting task of transforming the awkward teenager into an elegant lady. Hathaway must learn to walk (like a lady), dance (like a lady) and look (like a lady), in a matter of three weeks, courtesy of Granny's own makeover maestro and world-renowned hairstylist Larry Miller. Alas, the only thing that could top this storybook ending would be Andrews bursting into a stirring rendition of The Sound of Music. See "Special Showings" for details. --olufunke moses
