Beijing Bicycle

Reminiscent of Vittorio de Sica's 1948 The Bicycle Thief, the plot of filmmaker Wang Xiaoshuai's Beijing Bicycle is also the theft of a bicycle. The hero of the film is Guei (Cui Lin), a young man from the countryside working in the Chinese capital as a bike messenger. Rented from his employer for a portion of Guei's weekly income, the bicycle is his livelihood, and its disappearance is a tragedy with consequences. Guei engages in a citywide search for the bicycle that slowly leads him to Juan (Li Bin), a student who values the bike for very different reasons and considers the theft justified. See "Opening Friday" for details.
