Monster Camp

When: Aug. 28-30, 7:30 p.m. 2014
Price: $15
It's always the one you miss: We heard more about devised theatre company Summer Sisters' first creation, Tangles, than any other show last summer. When Rachel Klem, Tamara Kissane and a group of regional actors convened throughout the dog days of 2013, the result was a prismatic meditation on Alzheimer's combining humor, pathos, music and choreography. So when the crew went looking for an encore, naturally they chose Frankenstein. If you've never actually read Shelley's novel (subtitled The Modern Prometheus), fair warning: It differs just a tad from the later versions by Boris Karloff, Andy Warhol, Mel Brooks and Edgar Winter. In that early existential text, a different disaster occurs when neither creator nor creature are prepared for the implications of creation. And surprise: When we look at identity, alienation, relationships and responsibilities, the very definition of humanity comes into question. The cast includes Nicola Bullock, Flynt Burton, Amanda Hahn and Amber Wood. —Byron Woods
