Flicker Festival
Cat's Cradle—Late autumn marked the last Flicker screening for '07, and local filmmakers have spent the winter months brainstorming and creating new wonders for the screen in '08. But beware; these fresh film creations aren't for the lighthearted. This evening's focus is on madness and mayhem, with a selection of shorts about the walking dead, obsessive love and never-ending nightmares. The lights go down at 8:30 p.m. and admission is $3. —Kathy Justice

Wendy Call
Regulator Books—Have you ever wondered how you could be the person writing that engrossing, exotically datelined essay in Harper's or the Atlantic? Wendy Call, author of Telling True Stories: A Nonfiction Writers' Guide, will hold a writing workshop today—offering tips on finding a topic, gathering information and organizing it—and sign copies of her book, which includes examples from work by Nora Ephron, Tom Wolfe, Adam Hochschild, Tracy Kidder, Gay Talese, Malcolm Gladwell, Susan Orlean, Debra Dickerson, Phillip Lopate and Alma Guillermoprieto. For more info, visit or call 286-2700. —Megan Stein
