Duke Screen /Society—Duke's fall film series has kicked off, and this semester's Screen/Society program features multiple film series with themes ranging from Italian Cinema, outstanding recent films, and films dealing with issues of secrecy and privacy in different cultures. The second entry in its "French & Francophone Film Series: 'Cultures' typifies the outré, often controversial tone of this year's lineup with the 2004 documentary Frantz Fanon: His Life, His Struggle, His Work. It chronicles the life and times of the legendary Algerian psychiatrist who rebelled against French colonialism, aided France against the Nazis, founded Africa's first psychiatric clinic, and wrote numerous works dealing with the issues of racism and colonialism that haunted him for his entire life. Later films in the fall series include Taxi to the Dark Side, Standard Operating Procedure and Persepolis. The free screening is at 8 p.m. at the Griffin Film Theater at the Bryan Center on Duke's West Campus. For more information, visit fvd.aas.duke.edu/screensociety/schedule.php. —Zack Smith
