Memorial Day

State Capitol—Memorial Day was created after the Civil War to honor the Union dead. However, more wars came along and more men and women died. Memorial Day, despite also being the gateway to the summer, is now a solemn holiday that veterans' groups, especially, take care to preserve. At 7:30 p.m., there will be a candle-lighting service. Afterward, Air Force General Norman Gaddis, who was held captive in Hanoi during the Vietnam War, will speak. —David Fellerath
