Then and Now: Eight South African Photographers
Perkins Library, Duke Campus—Over the past generation, many nations have experienced profound upheavals, but none so much as the country that moved from an organized system of racist repression to a functioning liberal democracy. Photographer Paul Weinberg, a South African, came up with an idea to document his country's past and present with an exhibition of 160 photographs—20 from eight different photographers, who would divide their contributions between photos taken prior to the abolition of apartheid and after. The resulting exhibit will be displayed in five venues around the Duke campus, beginning today and continuing into December. The first installment is on display at the Rare Book Room in Perkins Library, and the official opening reception is Wednesday, April 2, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and is open to the public.
