Mick Foley

When: Wed., April 16, 7:30 p.m. 2014
Price: $25-$32

If the best comedy comes from pain, then hilarity is guaranteed from Mick Foley. Wrestling under names such as Cactus Jack, Mankind and Dude Love, Foley got famous for hardcore matches involving thumbtacks, barbed wire and other painful props. He cemented his status as a pro wrestling icon by getting hurled from the top of a 16-foot tall steel cage and through the announcers' table below. All those bumps eventually added up, and Foley's neurologist pushed him into retirement. So he put down the steel chair and picked up a pen. First, he wrote Have a Nice Day, a 200,000 word memoir—in longhand—in two months. It topped The New York Times best-seller list. So did his next book, Foley Is Good. Almost a dozen more followed, including novels and children's books (A Most Mizerable Christmas is cute), not to mention acting roles on 30 Rock and Squidbillies. With his stage and storytelling skills, Foley has also become a popular standup and spoken word performer, taking his easygoing style everywhere from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to comedy clubs. Wrestling stories provide much of his material, but you don't have to be a fan to relate to his workplace travails and tales of life on the road. (Leave the kids at home: The show is for ages 18 and up.) —Curt Fields
