Mayer Hawthorne & the County, Stepkids

When: Wed., May 2, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $15-18

Thankfully, Mayer Hawthorne's rendition of The Festivals' "You've Got the Makings of a Lover" from his Impressions EP of covers came liberated by a joyful, PillowTalk disco remix. Otherwise, the treacle would have deflated Impressions. At least last year's How Do You Do is a return to the form of his debut, A Strange Arrangement, entirely insistent upon restoring Motown's former glory. While romantically aspiring to throwback doo-wop, Hawthorne's pleads are more willful wonders than kitschy R&B wanderlusts. Soul music historians themselves, The Stepkids take an unfettered approach to reinventing a similar old-school sound; it's equally refined and is guaranteed to add atmosphere to a night of soulful satisfaction. —Eric Tullis
