Mary Poppins

When: Feb. 12-17 2013
Price: $40+

As a one-time geek for Pamela Travers' Mary Poppins novels, I'm excited to see the stage version of Disney's film of those books (don't think about it too much), which is said to fuse the deadpan stiff-upper-lip humor and sense of menace from the books with the more heartwarming plot of the movie. In the original books, Mary Poppins is very much a British nanny—one who is mostly annoyed and unimpressed with the magical elements around her, and hardly a warm, welcoming Julie Andrews. Disney's stage version was a huge hit on London's West End and had a six-year run on Broadway, where it's soon closing to make room for yet another Disney Broadway musical. (The next victim: Aladdin.) Now it's touring, so you can see Mary Poppins soar over the audience yourself—and if you're a fan of the original books, see if the book by Julian Fellowes (creator of Downton Abbey, and thus the Most British Writer Ever) has captured their spirit. Bonus: I hear you can buy replicas of Mary Poppins' parrot-headed umbrella at the souvenir stand. Awesome! Tuesday's opening show is at 7:30 p.m.; performances continue through Feb. 17. —Zack Smith
