Margaret Dunbar Cutright

When: Tue., Aug. 21, 7 p.m. 2012

North Carolina author Margaret Dunbar Cutright digs into her painful ancestry with A Case for Solomon: Bobby Dunbar and the Kidnapping that Haunted a Nation, a narrative that's already been the subject of a This American Life episode. It's the tale of how 4-year-old Bobby Dunbar went missing in the Louisiana swamps, only to be found eight months later ... and how, once he was found, another woman claimed he was her son. The aftermath of this case spread across nearly a century, and it was not until recent years that DNA testing finally proved the truth. It's amazing how many of those cases from back then could have been solved that way, isn't it? In this new volume, Dunbar Cutright examines the true history of this fascinating case and how it affected her family. She's at the Regulator Bookshop at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Her other local appearances include 3 p.m. Sunday at Quail Ridge Books & Music in Raleigh, 7 p.m. Monday at Flyleaf Books in Chapel Hill and Thursday, Aug. 30, at McIntyre's Books in Fearrington Village. —Zack Smith
