Man Man, Xenia Rubinos

When: Mon., Oct. 28, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $15
With a lead singer known as Honus Honus and songs in praise of butterbeans, Philadelphia experimental rock hybridists Man Man might come off a bit gimmicky. But this prolific outfit has the smarts, chops and oomph to transcend the limits of goof. Over five LPs, they've toned down the silliness, though their multilayered tunes still draw on party rock, garage, R&B and prog. "Head On (Hold on to Your Heart)," from the new On Oni Pond, is a blissful, string-accented jaunt. It brings to mind Modest Mouse, with whom Man Man toured in 2007. Opener Xenia Rubinos mixes emphatic, off-kilter backing with a spellbinding voice. —David Klein
