Magic Wings Festival

When: Sat., May 5, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. 2012

Perhaps you've noticed a recent fluttering upon bushes across the Triangle. Durham's world-class science museum celebrates these butterfly and moth residents with the annual Magic Wings Festival. Bug races and butterfly releases happen throughout the day. Your scamps can compete in the Dung Beetle Roll and Leaf Cutter Ant Schlep. Booths from SEEDS of Durham, N.C. State's entomology department, Durham County Master Gardeners and other organizations offer information and activities. Performers include Alex Weiss & Different Drum, Avery Henderson aka Wild Thing and Storyteller Wayne Poole, Durham Youth Violinists and others. And you can venture into the crunchy, protein-rich world of entomophagy at the museum's new Dare Cafe. The event runs 10 a.m.–5 p.m. and is included in the museum admission price. —Chris Vitiello
