William Tyler, Loamlands

When: Thu., April 11, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $8-10

When people speak of Nashville guitarist William Tyler, they tend to lead with his history as an uncommonly gifted sideman. He's lent tasteful but enthralling fills to bands such as Lambchop and the Silver Jews. He contributed a searing, psychedelic solo to Haw, the new album from Durham's Hiss Golden Messenger. But Tyler is much more than an adaptable collaborator, a fact he's proven with three beautiful solo LPs and live appearances that range from tender acoustic architecture to bold experimentation.

"With what I'm doing, the melodies are pretty important. The guitar is a good conduit for it," Tyler says. "I just view it as a nice tool, a way to make music, but I'm not married to the concept of me being a solo guitar player." The new Impossible Truth backs up this notion, emphasizing Tyler's knack for composition as he counterpoints his hypnotic tunes with triumphant horns, rhythmic accessories and wowing distortion. Opening is Loamlands, the new project from former Midtown Dickens members Kym Register and Will Hackney. —Jordan Lawrence
