Life Through Quilts

When: Aug. 6-Oct. 3 2010
www.durhamarts.org

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then some quilts are worth a library shelf. Explore the connections between life, craft and art in Life Through Quilts: Works by the African American Quilt Circle of Durham, on display today through Oct. 3. Organized by members of AAQC (recently honored in the Indy with an Indies Arts Award) and presented by the DAC, the show features 50 quilts by 21 members of Durham's cherished circle of quilters. The full gamut of this rich medium is represented, from traditional everyday quilts and machine work emphasizing utility and design to more sculptural fiber arts and art quilts featuring appliqué and the incorporation of unconventional materials such as white church gloves. On Aug. 20, start your Third Friday at the show with Chuck Davis and the African American Dance Ensemble, which will perform in the galleries (with some of the quilters, too!), and Willa Brigham will tell stories. —Chris Vitiello
