Leon Russell

When: Thu., Aug. 29, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $28-38
His first band featured J.J. Cale. At 16, he was studying under Elvis guitarist James Burton. During the '60s, he was in Phil Spector's studio mafia, even arranging Ike & Tina Turner's "River Deep—Mountain High." He then enjoyed a chart-topping solo run starting in the '70s. Yeah, Leon Russell's had a decent career. Fluent in country, roots, rock, pop and gospel, Russell has circumnavigated Americana. In the post-O Brother moment, he delivered with 2007's crackling blues-funk Angel in Disguise and 2010's terrific T Bone Burnett-produced collaboration with Elton John, The Union. His cavernous Okie drawl and underappreciated mastery of widely differing styles have made him a legend worth revisiting. Knoxville singer-songwriter Logan Brill opens the show; her debut album Walking Wires is due from Nashville label Carnival in October. —Chris Parker
