Lee Smith

When: Fri., Oct. 25, 8 p.m. 2013
North Carolina literary staple and N.C. State faculty veteran Lee Smith gets a hometown honoring in Hillsborough just in time for her new novel, Guests on Earth, from Chapel Hill's Algonquin Books. It explores the world of Highland Hospital in Asheville in the events leading up to the tragic 1948 fire that killed nine women, including Zelda Fitzgerald. In recognition of this and the 45th anniversary of her first novel, The Last Day the Dogbushes Bloomed, Algonquin Books and the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance have declared Oct. 21–27 "Lee Smith Week," with a series of events celebrating her contributions to North Carolina's rich literary tradition. At this one, Smith will speak about her life and career. She should have plenty to say. —Zack Smith
