L.A. Confidential

When: Fri., Oct. 26, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $5 ($3.50 for members)

Russell Crowe's noble bruiser of a cop Bud White visits the home of Kim Basinger's heart-o'-gold hooker Lynn Bracken to question her. When he shows up at the door, he finds her entertaining a client. White tells dude to hit the bricks before he calls his wife to pick him up. Before he leaves, we hear this brief exchange: "Officer," the man politely utters. "Councilman," White politely utters back. Therein lies the brilliance of L.A. Confidential. That brief but chuckle-worthy moment gives us an idea how corruption was as commonplace as breathing in 1950s Los Angeles, as the movie shows flawed cops (played by Crowe, Guy Pearce and Kevin Spacey) wading through the city's cesspool of sordid sleaziness, looking for a way out. It also shows how well director Curtis Hanson and writer Brian Helgeland (who both got Oscars for their screenplay) tackled James Ellroy's 496-page novel, stripping down the hefty narrative and focusing more on the psychology of its characters—and, yet, still keeping the book's detailed, glitzy amorality intact. N.C. State film studies director Marsha Orgeron will introduce the film at 8 p.m. —Craig D. Lindsey
