Kim Richey, The Small Ponds

When: Thu., April 25, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $15

Much like Shelby Lynne, Kim Richey explored manifold styles after her initial country breakthrough. She finally arrived at a sound that blends them all. Her voice throws you into the doors when it corners, and you reach for something to hold onto as she unloads her emotional payload with attention-consuming grace. Her new record, released by local label Yep Roc, is a powerful, heavy-hearted album of understated country-folk with enough polish to cross over to adult pop. She drinks down her heartache but for the "Angels' Share," and on the title track, she wonders if her lover will ever be more than a Thorn in My Heart. Raleigh outfit The Small Ponds are a fitting opener, given that singer Caitlin Cary's former Whiskeytown bandmate Ryan Adams once shared a record label and songwriters' tour with Richey. —Chris Parker
